New Department of Energy Standards Take Effect

Effective January 23, 2006, The Department of Energy’s new standards for residential air conditioners went into effect. Newly manufactured central air conditioners must now achieve a Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) of 13 or higher. The new standard will be 30 percent more efficient than the previous 10 SEER standard. Air conditioners made before the new standard went into effect can still be sold and installed until the existing supply is diminished. The Department of Energy’s new standard is predicted to save homeowners $1 billion in energy cost over the next 25 years.

Is it Time for a Change?

Heating and cooling are two of the most important factors of home ownership. With the average home spending around $1,600 annually on energy bills, half as much can account for heating and cooling. By purchasing newly recommended energy efficiency equipment coupled with quality installation, not only will you feel a difference in the comfort level of your home, you can also save money every month on your energy bill.

You may want to consider making an upgrade if:
  • Your air conditioner or heat pump is more than 13 years old. Advancements in energy efficiency components could drastically reduce your heating and cooling cost.
  • Some of your rooms are too cold or too hot. Inadequate insulation and air sealing on or around your ducts could be the cause. Regardless of how efficient your heating and cooling system is, insufficient duct work can reduce your systems efficiency by as much as 20%.
  • Your home has excessive dust or humidity problems. Complete home comfort is about more than just temperature; it’s also about maintaining a healthy home with quality indoor air. Adding a high quality unit can eliminate 99% of the pollutants and humidity problems threatening your home and your health.
  • Your heating and cooling equipment needs constant repairs. Temporary fixes and a poorly conditioned unit can lead to a less efficient home.
